I’m just going to put this out there right away––a lot of my content is for men, however, these tips for developing your first skin care routine will apply to both men and women! Now that that’s made known, let’s get into it.

Your skin takes a beating day in and day out, it’s only right that you take care of it for several reasons. One, your skin gets harder to repair and take care of as you get older. Two, your skin is one of the first things people will notice about you.

Now I know you’re probably thinking the same thing I was years ago, “skin care is complicated and doesn’t it get expensive?”

To address those concerns, skin care is a science, there’s no question. Luckily, this is a science we all can understand. In terms of it being expensive, sure, it certainly can be. But it doesn’t have to be. If this all sounds good to you, let’s get into the tips for developing your first skin care routine.

Start With The Necessities

Your skin doesn’t need numerous different products to look and feel great. In fact, I believe you can begin your skin care journey with only three products: A cleanser, a moisturizer, and an SPF.

  1. Your cleanser you should use in the morning and evening. This will clean all the dirt and grime that your face endured throughout the day and night.
  2. After your cleanser you should pat your skin dry and apply your moisturizer. This will give your skin the nourishment it needs to look great throughout the day. You should also use your moisturizer both in the morning and before bed.
  3. Finally, your SPF. Far too many people neglect using an SPF and it’s seriously damaging their skin. The sun rays are brutal to your skin so it’s important that you do what you can to protect it and I’m not just telling you this because I’m a redhead.

Now let me clear something up really quick––you should not use a general sunscreen on your face. The sunscreen you buy at the store is designed for the rest of your body but the skin on your face requires a product designed for that skin. Luckily, you only need to apply your SPF in the morning. Depending on the SPF and how much you perspire, you may need to reapply after a few hours. Just make sure to read the label of the product you’re using.

Here’s a list of skin care products that I’m currently using. You’ll notice many of my products are oil-free because I tend to have oily skin. Based on your type of skin, you can adjust this as needed.

Of course those are all the products that I’ve found work for me and my skin. Finding the right products takes time. Now my skin care products range in prices so I’m going to provide a list of the three products you need to start your first skin care routine. Below are a budget-friendly way, a middle of the ground price point, and something a little more lux.

Middle-Ground

A Little More Expensive but Still Realistic

Less Is More

A lot of people make the mistake of applying way too much product. Skin care products come in small packages because they’re designed and formulated to go further than it looks. Start with a small bit––think about the size of a penny––you can always add more later but there’s no sense in wasting excess product.

Pro Tip

Don’t squeeze your moisturizer or SPF into your hands and rub them together; this just wastes the product. Instead, express the product on the top of your hand between the knuckles of your thumb and index finger. From here you can get some product on your finger and apply the product in dots on your face and work the product into your skin from there.
