How Minimalism Supports Your Mental Health and Wellness

There’s no question that mental health is a serious matter around the world. Everyone has experienced feeling down, overwhelmed, or stressed in their life at one point or another. Luckily, there’s this thing called minimalism. I’ve found a ton of value in it for both my mental health but also in my everyday life. Below I discuss three ways minimalism supports your mental health and wellness.

More Time To Do What You Truly Want

There’s a major problem, particularly in the United States with people using the “B” word. Now, this probably isn’t the word you’re thinking of––we’re talking about the word “busy.”

Everybody is getting busier and busier and in most cases, it’s not for the reasons they want to be busy. Sound familiar?

Minimalism is the practice of ridding yourself with the things––personal belongings, personal obligations, schedules, etc.––that don’t fulfill you.

By giving yourself permission to let go of things––whatever those things are for you––you’re going to have a lot more time on your hands. Time that could be used learning a new hobby, spending time with loved ones, or simply you time.

Reduced Stress

The average American household has over 300,000 items in it. Chances are, the majority of us don’t actually need a fraction of that.

In fact, there’s overwhelming evidence that shows us clutter increases stress. America is one of the most stressed countries and a majority of that stress is self-induced. Of course, there are serious exceptions but what if there was just one thing you could do to reduce some of the stress in your life?

Through minimalism, you can slowly begin decluttering the excess stuff in your life. I did it, and trust me, the result is peaceful, simple, and most importantly, intentional.

Each and every item in your home or office should serve a purpose. If you haven’t used something in more than a year, do you really think you value it? Give yourself permission to let go.

A Clearer Mind

Minimalism also supports your mental health and wellness by giving you more headspace. A more clear and sound mind. In a world where we are bombarded with social media, advertisements, text messages, phone calls, and more––we rarely have time to think for ourselves anymore.

Letting go of the things that don’t truly add value to your life or that don’t help you reach your personal goals will feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders.
