Everyone has seen or knows that one person. You know, that person that somehow looks better and more confident than everyone in the room but you just can’t tell why. More often than not, it’s their personal style.

You (yes, you) might have your own style or you might not. The point is, everyone benefits from having a style that’s unique to themself. I’ve been working on developing my personal style for years and to be frank, I’m still developing it. But I know I’ve learned a thing or two over the years that are applicable for everyone which is why I’m sharing these four tips for finding your personal style.

Ask Yourself Some Questions

First and foremost, you need to ask yourself some questions:

  • What styles do I gravitate towards?
  • How do I want to present myself?
  • What is the meaning of life?

Okay, maybe not the last one but the first two questions can guide you through the process of developing your style. Asking yourself, what styles do I gravitate towards? Is an important one, here’s why.

Everyone who wants to look their best generally finds inspiration by looking at the people around them whether that’s in person or online. When you look at someone else’s outfit, you might think, “I really like that jacket” or “those shoes do not look right with that outfit.” What you’re doing is picking up on styles and accessories that you like––don’t fight it.

Asking yourself, how do I want to present myself? Will also guide you through the process. Some of us work in an office that requires a suit and tie everyday. Others work in labor intensive jobs that need functional outfits more than anything. Be real with yourself and don’t try to be something you’re not.

Stop Doing What Society Tells You To Do

We’ve all experienced it in some capacity; society says you need to dress this way or that way––don’t listen to them. Personal style is just that, personal. Authentic. You. If you try to dress like store mannequins or fashion models, you’re merely dressing how companies want you to dress. That’s not personal style. Now I’m not saying you can’t use them for inspiration because you certainly can, just find ways to make the outfit your own.

That said, one of the most important tips I can give you for finding your personal style is to stop following trends. Buying “trendy” clothes are often low-quality and they’ll almost certainly be out-of-style in a year.

Instead, buy clothes that are timeless; classics that have stood the test of time. This will help you build a wardrobe that will last a lifetime.

Here are some examples of timeless pieces for men:

As long as you stick to the basics, you’ll have a timeless wardrobe that suits your personal style.

Look for Inspiration

Everybody needs inspiration when it comes to style. I strongly recommend asking stylish people in your life where they get their inspiration from. Some great sources of inspiration are Instagram, Pinterest, and YouTube.

When you’re searching for inspiration, it’s best to be as specific as you can. Don’t merely search for “style inspiration” because you’ll be flooded with marketers trying to sell you the next trend.

Don’t Overthink It

The biggest mistake people make when trying to find their style is they overthink everything. Sure, developing a personal style can take some effort but anything good requires effort. Like I mentioned in the beginning, I’ve been working on my personal style for years––so don’t expect an overnight result. Good things take time and so does a killer outfit.

I hope these tips for finding your personal style helped you. If they did, please let me know! I’d love to hear about it and I’d love to give you some pointers if you need help.
